Community Workshops to help you complete an Advance Care Directive

Each month, the Alliance for Living and Dying Well offers free workshops on Advance Care Planning.  At seven different locations each month throughout Santa Barbara, people begin the process of documenting their wishes for the kind of healthcare they want if they cannot speak for themselves.

All workshops are free and open to the public

What to Expect at an Alliance Workshop

Attending one of our Advance Care Planning Workshops is a unique experience. The information below can help you anticipate what happens and what you can expect from our workshops.

How many people will be there? Attendance at our workshops generally varies from 2-3 up to 25 people at each event.   The Sansum Clinic location generally hosts over 20 people each session, while our other workshops provide a small-group atmosphere.

Who will lead the workshop? Experienced volunteers trained specifically in Advance Care Planning will take you through the process step by step.  Our facilitators do this important work because it is personally meaningful and they derive satisfaction from sharing their insights and experiences with others.

How much does it cost for materials? All materials are free!  The Alliance for Living and Dying Well will provide you with a folder, complete with the Advance Heath Care Directive document and supplemental information about choosing a Health Care Agent and making choices about life-sustaining treatments like CPR, tube feeding and ventilators.

Do I have to finish the document during the Workshop? No, and quite frankly, most people do not.  The good news is you're welcome to attend as many free workshops as you need to complete your document.  In addition, you may schedule a  1-on-1 personal appointment with a Facilitator, which would take place during a scheduled workshop. All 1-on-1 appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling the Alliance at 805-845-5314.
